Land Measurement Units Across Indian States
India uses a wide variety of traditional land measurement units that differ from state to state. These units appear in land revenue records, sale deeds, mutation registers, court orders and bank mortgage documents. Understanding which unit belongs to your state - and what it equals in square feet or square meters - is essential for property buyers, sellers, farmers, lawyers and revenue officials. Jamin Calculator provides a separate, state-calibrated calculator for every Indian state, each built with the exact unit definitions from that state's official land revenue standards.
North India - Bigha, Biswa and Marla
Uttar Pradesh uses the Pucca Bigha (27,225 sq ft) and Kuchha Bigha (13,612 sq ft), with Biswa, Biswansi and Dhur as sub-units. Bihar has a unique district-based system where Dhur, Kattha and Bigha sizes depend on each district's Laggi-Haath value - the only such variable-unit system in India. Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh follow a Bigha standard of 27,225 sq ft. Himachal Pradesh uses a smaller Bigha of 8,712 sq ft with Nali and Biswa as sub-units. Punjab and Haryana use Marla (272.25 sq ft), Kanal (20 Marla) and Bigha (8 Kanal) for property measurement. Delhi follows the Marla and Gaj system for urban plots alongside Square Yard and Square Meter.
South India - Cent, Guntha and Ground
Tamil Nadu and Kerala measure land in Cent (435.6 sq ft), with 100 Cent equal to 1 Acre. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana use Cent, Guntha (1,089 sq ft) and Ankanam (72 sq ft) for different land types. Karnataka uses Guntha and Acre for agricultural land and Square Meter for urban property registration. Maharashtra uses Guntha (1,089 sq ft), Bigha and Acre across its districts. The Ground unit, common in Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu, equals 2,400 sq ft. Goa uses metric units alongside older Portuguese-era measurements that appear in historical records.
East and Central India - Bigha, Katha and Decimal
West Bengal uses Bigha (14,400 sq ft), Katha (720 sq ft), Chhatak (45 sq ft) and Decimal (435.6 sq ft). Odisha uses Decimal, Guntha and Cent across its regions. Assam uses a Bigha of 14,400 sq ft with Lessa as a sub-unit. Jharkhand shares units common to both Bihar and Bengal. Northeast states use Bigha and Lessa of varying sizes depending on local custom and community. Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh use Bigha and Biswa standards close to UP.
